“I don’t like the idea that something as small as what I’m wearing means would have such a big influence on my ability to function in a certain situation. Cause I’d like to think I have more control.”
Words from a test subject in an experiment by Professor Adam Galinksy (Columbia Business School).
He tested if wearing a Doctor’s white coat would make you feel and behave smarter.
Result: People in white doctor’s coats made half as many errors because they paid more attention.
What struck me is what that one test subject about control.
When given a simple solution, you can dismiss it because it’s hard to fathom tiny shifts have BIG impacts.
Yet, I wish I could tell her that she does have more control already.
Control to choose and invest in simple solutions so she can have more energy to enjoy the benefits.
See your control isn’t meant for BIG unyielding challenges. You manage the BIG things by finding simple solutions to make it bite-sized.
It’s why so many people dismiss copywriting. They want to control people instead connect with them.
So to them “Words on a page couldn’t possibly affect sales and reach.”
That said, if I were to write a nice email to them and an angry one, they’d be the first to tell me how those words affect them differently.
See simple solutions are good.
It means less upfront energy, more focus on what matters, and greater return for your investment and effort.
