Got an awesome text this week from my friend in LA. You’ll actually be seeing him in the new HBO show WESTWORLD when it premieres soon.
Before he was super fly on premium cable, he and I were super fly and super broke.
Funny story.
When I got called to work at Google (on my birthday), I had about $20 to my name. Barely enough to call a cab to take me to the airport where my free ticket to Mountain View HQ awaited.
I made it to SF and had a warm hotel that I gladly shared with my boy Michael. He was traveling the states and living in his pimped out van at the time. So a real bed was a welcome prize for him.
But now that I was “doing well” (still broke, but “Google-broke” until my first paycheck in two weeks), we made sure we got the most out of every Google dollar.
While I was at work, earning my keep for the company…
Michael was enjoying hotel life.
Sleeping indoors.
Cooking in a kitchen.
Working out in a gym.
Getting a tan.
Swimming in a pool.
Doing laundry.
Taking a hot shower.
Watching cable.
All in a hard day’s work.
Why do I share this?
One because it’s funny looking back and being grateful.
And two because it’s how I roll. I play to win. When I do win, everyone around me wins too. I bring others in for the ride so they can have a taste of what it’s like and make it their own like Michael did.
In fact, I never play a game where I will be the only winner in it. So when you invest in me, you get my whole crew too.
Not a popular way of approaching life, I know, but that’s. how. I. roll.
It’s why I teach influence because it’s something I live every day. I know it works, and I want you to enjoy it too.
