I used to live in the City, or as the uninitiated call it, “New York City”.
My exploits were legendary. (Still are.)
My home life however… rough.
Strangers crashed at my spot with last minute plans, roommates brought ignorant crowds after drunken nights too, and the same roommates with low cleaning standards invited their roach buddies.
Fun!
I considered all the uninvited as roaches. Roaches living comfortably in my space, until slowly, I felt put out.
I realize now… maintaining a home is very similar to building an email list.
You don’t want the uninvited eating up all your resources, sticking around not saying much to you, and just ignoring you when you share your best stories.
Those are mouks!
Mooching mouks living off your best work.
You want to be around people who care about what you do, and are focused on pursuing it like you are.
Really, I guess I didn’t like living in the City because everyone lived well off me, but no one helped to keep it clean or offered to pay the rent.
It’s also the REAL reason I don’t have a “lead magnet”/”opt-in offer”/welcome mat for my list to this day…
… like I said…
… I hate when people stick around, but don’t pay the rent.
When you joined this list, my promise upfront was to talk about one topic “building relationships with email”.
As a result, my invites attracted you and others who believe in that concept and want it for themselves.
Plain and simple, to be on this list, you have to want to be here.
The reward is immediate daily email knowledge, and if you spend enough time asking smart questions, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of “Relationship Design”.
Instantly people qualified themselves without me having to check their ID.
When considering your “lead magnet”, you can be bold and skip it altogether like me.
Or give away a nifty gift that sends the right message.
Make it a tool that demonstrates your specialized expertise so you prove your value quickly.
Make it a worksheet that cleverly teaches the fundamentals of your unique approach so that you prime your new reader for to take their new insights to the next level, faster.
Make it a report on how to overcome the most common fear or bias your best reader has so that you hold their hand, let them know they aren’t alone, and give them a sense of empowerment for the next step.
Whichever you do, have it be a story-filled, entertaining introduction to who you are and what you do {Your name}.
At this point, action-takers who opt-in are guaranteed to believe in your message, and want to join the conversation for more support.
Action-takers who are vocal and reply often with constructive insight, forward your work to peers, offer valuable opportunities to collaborate, and even buy your products and services.
In all cases, they’re DOers who pay the rent.
You’ve invested in your work. Isn’t it time to live with people who invest in it too?
Want to create the best opt-in gifts for your future readers? Sign up for a Strategy Session with me tomorrow.
2 sessions still open for you.
We’ll craft a nifty welcome mat presentation that will attract the best investment focused readers, and repel freeloading cockroaches.
Be well,
Max!
P.S. I’m visiting the City this week.
Spending time at a private conference with the people who helped me build my business. The likes of Selena Soo, Kimra Luna and other mates I’ve been meeting, helping and/or collaborated with this past year.
(hint-hint: All VIPs I’ve met using powerful email scripts found in my new book EEQR.)
If you’re in NYC these last days of February, I want to jam with you too {Your name}. You’ve helped me grow in so many ways after all.
Let’s eat Jacques Torres cookies on my favorite rooftops or sip original drinks at fly speakeasies or eat the best pancakes in the world at Café Luluc.
Reply. We’ll make plans.
Maybe even do an impromptu Event of just you and other subscribers?
I’ll happily extend my stay to make that possible.
