4 reasons not to buy from strangers

Last week I had to turn away people with their wallets out, who wanted to work with me.

It was bittersweet.

Sweet because people wanted to pay me even though it wasn’t in their best interest.

Bitter because, well… I like money… especially money from people who like me and want to work together.

(Ever have someone force you to take your money, it can get weird fast?)

This happens though when your results speak for themselves, you attract almost everyone, even the ones who aren’t the best fit.

In each case, I steered the charitable parties in the right direction to make the most out of their dollar and time.

Since then I’ve been thinking how do we know when it’s appropriate to invest in high-ticket items.

My list so far:

1 – You have to be able to afford it.
If you can’t afford something outright don’t buy it. It’s OK to opt for a payment plan to make it manageable though.

2 – Be investment-minded.
Think of yourself 6 months from now, where do you want to be, and who do you want to be? Will this purchase help you get there?

3 – Batteries not included.
When you buy a new gadget, you have to also own batteries for it. For your purchase will you need extra accessories to get the most out of it? Are there things you need to have already before making this purchase?

4 – You have to respect the vendor and its values?
Often people invest in the idea of something forgetting other values they hold dear. When you support a vendor, you support the values they champion too. Are your values aligned with theirs?

These are the things I think of when I plan my marketing strategy.

As a seller/vendor, I want to make sure the people I serve can afford my work, are committed to the long haul, have what they need to get the most out of it, and have similar values as me.

If that’s not all in the order, then we probably won’t get a long, and the project won’t be fun.

I like having fun with my work. Don’t you?
